Nevada Teacher Certification Application Information and Instructions

To be eligible for recommendation by the Certification Office, students completing a bachelor's degree, a post baccalaureate certification or a Master of Special Education degree must graduate and have their degree posted to their WGU transcript. Students who are pursuing a Master of Teaching degree must have marks of "passed” on their Degree Plan for all teacher preparation assessments to include any program required Praxis exams as well as all state required exams. MATELK8 students may need to make up additional literacy requirement if applying for licensure before graduation. Therefore, it is recommended that MATELK8 students graduate before applying for licensure.

Note: ARL students with conditional Nevada licenses do not need to license initially in Utah. They may apply for licensure following the directions below without first obtaining a Utah license. 

Nevada accepts direct applications for licensure from teacher candidates who have completed an out-of-state, approved teacher preparation program, like those offered at WGU. Follow the steps below to prepare your application for Nevada licensure.

Step 1: Review the "First Time Applicant Checklist" on the Nevada Department of Education website.

Step 2: Submit your registration through the OPAL Online Licensing System. You only need to upload the Verification of Teaching Experience form if you have been licensed in another state and were employed as a full-time teacher under that license.     

Step 3: Request official electronic transcripts from every college you have attended. For WGU electronic transcripts, see WGU Transcript Request. Do not request a transcript until you have received notice of graduation, so that your graduation date will appear on your transcript. Masters students may request a transcript after completing the teacher preparation portion of their master's program. Electronic transcript must be emailed to transcripts@nv.doe.gov directly from the issuing organization. 


Step 4: Email licensure@wgu.edu to request a letter of recommendation on university letterhead to upload to the Application/Forms page of your online application.

Step 5: If the Nevada Department of Education is not listed as a recipient on your Praxis score report, you will need to contact ETS and request that they mail an official score report directly to NV DOE. You may do this by calling 1-800-772-9476 or by submitting the Additional Score Report Request Form to ETS via fax or mail.  

 

Note: Applicants must have passed the required exams within five years prior to the date they apply for licensure.

 

Step 6: Compile all application documents:


1. Completed application through the OPAL system
2. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
3. Two completed fingerprint cards and Fingerprint Authorization form, if applicable

4. Recommendation letter from step 4 
5. Payment submission on the online application in the form of Visa, MasterCard, or Discover in the amount of $180,00. If you requested a paper application to mail-in, you may use the credit card authorization form available here, no cash or personal checks are accepted. 

 

Step 7: Submit your completed electronic application. 

 

Step 8: Background Clearance: If you choose to submit your fingerprints electronically via Livescan, do not have your fingerprints taken prior to turning in your licensure application. The Nevada DOE will provide you with the necessary paperwork. You will be sent the authorization form via email. If you do not have access to an approved Livescan location, or if you would prefer not to submit your fingerprints electronically, you may submit a fingerprint card along with your completed licensure application and payment.
