How to Add an Additional Endorsement

MA Mathematics Education (MAME)

and

MA Science Education (MASE)

To add additional subject areas in New York in math or science, you must complete 30 semester hours of content coursework in the subject you wish to add. WGU endorsement programs do not contain a total of 30 semester hours in the content area.

You therefore either need to have already completed additional content coursework in a previous program(s), or you must plan to complete additional coursework after you graduate. You may wish to apply for your additional certificate first so that the NYSDE can tell you officially how many credits you need to make up. However, note that the application process often takes several months to complete.

In addition to 30 semester hours in the new content area, you must pass the appropriate content exam for the new content area. Details on requirements for available certification areas can be accessed on the "Search Certification Requirements" page of the NY State Education Department website.

After you graduate from your WGU endorsement program, refer to the Application Instructions at the bottom of this article.

Note: The requirements to add an endorsement in New York are the same, whether you are adding an endorsement at a new grade level (Elementary to Secondary) or the same grade level (Secondary to Secondary).

MS Special Education

(MSSP)

Educators holding a valid New York teaching certificate can apply for Special Education certification areas after completing a state-approved endorsement preparation program like those offered at WGU and passing the appropriate exam(s) required by New York. Details on requirements for available certification areas can be accessed on the "Search Certification Requirements" page of the NY State Education Department website. After you graduate from your WGU endorsement program, refer to the Application Instructions at the bottom of this article.

English Language Learning
(ENDELL, MAELL)

Educators holding a valid New York teaching certificate can apply for English to Speakers of Other Languages certification after completing a WGU English Language Learning program and passing appropriate exam(s) required by New York. In addition to WGU’s program, you must pass 12 semester hours in a foreign language, which are not offered at WGU.

Details on requirements for available certification areas can be accessed on the "Search Certification Requirements" page of the NY State Education Department website. After you graduate from your WGU endorsement program, refer to the Application Instructions below.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

To be eligible for recommendation by the Certification Office, students completing a bachelor's degree, a post baccalaureate certification or Master's degree must graduate and have their degree posted to their WGU transcript.

Graduates of WGU endorsement preparation programs can apply for New York certification in that new subject area by following the directions below.

Step 1: Request official transcripts in sealed envelopes from every college where you completed coursework applicable to the endorsement sought. Two copies of your final WGU transcript will be sent to you along with your diploma upon graduation. If you would like to order additional transcripts, see WGU Transcript Request. Be sure to leave your transcripts in the sealed envelopes to be included with your application packet.

Step 2: Write to licensure@wgu.edu and request that a letter be sent to you for inclusion in your application packet verifying that the WGU teacher preparation program you completed is state-approved in Utah to lead to teacher certification in New York. Please confirm your mailing address in this email.  WGU must have copies of all exam scores on file before the Certification Officer can complete your recommendation letter.

Step 3: To complete your application in TEACH, please follow the instructions in the NY Teacher and Administrator Certification Application Information and Instructions article in the student handbook.

Step 4: After completing your application in TEACH, mail all official transcripts and the state-approved program letter you requested according to the instructions provided on TEACH.

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) will make the authoritative and final determination about your eligibility for any type of certification. The NYSED may, at its discretion, require graduates of any program to complete additional coursework to become eligible for certification.
