New York has the following general requirements for applicants for an initial teaching certificate:

1. OUT-OF-STATE PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from of an approved teacher education program in another state. The program must be comparable to a New York teacher preparation program and must lead to certification in the home-state in which the program is approved.

New York requires a graduation date on an official transcript submitted as verification of program completion. WGU students in Masters of Arts in Teaching programs must graduate prior to becoming eligible for certification in New York. This can be done by arranging with your mentor after completing Demonstration Teaching to graduate from the Post-baccalaureate program, then re-enrolling in the Master of Arts in Teaching program, or by waiting to apply for certification until after graduation from the Master of Arts in Teaching program.

2. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a Bachelor's degree program completed at a regionally accredited college or university.

3. BACKGROUND CLEARANCE: Background clearance resulting from completion of the required background check.

4. CONTENT AND PEDAGOGY EXAMS: Passing scores on the NYSTCE content and pedagogy exams.

5. COMPLETION OF WORKSHOPS: Completion of designated workshops in child abuse identification , school violence intervention and prevention, and the Dignity for All Students Act.  Completion of an Autism workshop is required for Students with Disabilities (special education) certification.

6. TEACHING PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT: Completion of the New York Teaching Performance Assessment.
