Ohio has the following general requirements for all applicants for initial teacher certification who have completed an Ohio state-approved teacher preparation program:

 

  1. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.

 

  1. PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: Completion of a state approved teacher education program.

 

  1. BACKGROUND CLEARANCE: Background clearance resulting from completion of the required background check

 

  1. EXAMS: Passing scores on the required Ohio Assessments for Educators content and pedagogy exams and passing scores on the WGU Program Required Praxis exams when applicable.

  2. TEACHING PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT: Completion of the Ohio Teaching Performance Assessment requirement.

  3. READING AND PHONICS (for the license area of Early Childhood Education): WGU's Elementary Education programs (catalog versions 201709 and newer) meet the 12 semester hours of reading and phonics required by Ohio.
