LICENSE AND EXAM REQUIREMENTS
Secondary Mathematics Certification Available: Secondary Mathematics, Grades 7-12
Graduates of a WGU Master of Arts in Mathematics Education (MAME) grades 5-12 teacher preparation program will be eligible for grades 7-12 mathematics teacher certification in Puerto Rico, which will allow them to teach in any single subject mathetmatics classroom in that grade range. While WGU's mathematics teacher preparation programs cover grades 5-12, grades 7-12 certification will be awarded in PR because that is how the PR Department of Education defines the grade range of secondary-level certification.
Puerto Rico only certifies students at the secondary level in grades 7-12. WGU students should not enroll in a grades 5-9 science or mathematics program if they are seeking certification.
To add a new teaching area to a Puerto Rico Certificate, students must complete 21 semester hours in the new content area, teaching and methodology courses at the grade level in which they wish to teach, and the required PCMAS exam required for certification. Your WGU program may not include all 21 semester hours required by Puerto Rico.
Mathematics Exams and Requirements:
Puerto Rico Content Exam: PCMAS Pruebas de especialidad en las siguientes materias: Matemáticas
WGU Program Requirement: You have two options to satisfy the WGU Program Requirement. You may pass either:
1. Praxis II 0061 (paper) or 5061 (computer), Mathematics: Content Knowledge
2. Praxis II 5161, Mathematics: Content Knowledge
To qualify for mathematics certification in PR, you must pass the exams that correspond with your program in the chart above as well as meet all other general Puerto Rico teacher certification requirements. The Praxis II exams listed above will also satisfy the WGU Program Requirement for MAME programs.
REGISTERING FOR EXAMS
Before registering for the PCMAS and Praxis exams, be sure to review WGU's general policies regarding external certification exams. Praxis exam registration is available through the ETS website at www.ets.org/praxis; PCMAS exam registration is available through the College Board's PCMAS website. The websites will provide you with the test dates available. The minimum required scores for Puerto Rico and Utah can be found by reviewing the PCMAS FAQ Page and the UT Praxis Exam Requirements.
SUBMITTING SCORES TO WGU
To ensure that WGU receives ALL of your exam scores and can verify your eligibility for licensure, you must fax a copy of your official score report to the Assessments Office at 1-801-606-7021 or email a scanned copy to email@example.com. All required exam scores must be on file with WGU at your time of graduation so that the Certification Officer can recommend you for certification.
