Rhode Island Background Clearance Information

 

Background checks submitted for clearance in Rhode Island must be fewer than two years old on the end date of demonstration teaching to meet WGU requirements. Background checks that will be more than two years old on the end date of demonstration teaching must be renewed by the background clearance deadline set for your cohort.
 

REQUIRED BACKGROUND CLEARANCES

FBI Clearance Information:

If you have lived in states other than Rhode Island after age 18, you will need to get a FBI national background check in addition to a Rhode Island Bureau of Criminal Information background check. 

 

1) Order a background check from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) by following these instructions

2) Have the background check results sent to you, and upload your background check results in your student Field Experience portal under PCE Background Clearance and/or DT Background Clearance.

PCE Clearance Information:

Prior to Preclinical Experience (PCE) and Demonstration Teaching (DT), you must request a copy of your Rhode Island Bureau of Criminal Information background check.  You can do so in person at the BCI window with a valid form of identification and payment.  You can also request it by mailing a signed and notarized Release for Information that identifies you as the recipient of your record, a copy of a picture ID, check or money order for $5.00 payable to BCI, and a self addressed, stamped envelope to:

When you have received the background check results, please upload your background check results in your student Field Experience portal under PCE Background Clearance and/or DT Background Clearance.  For further information, call the BCI at (401) 274-4400 or visit their web page.

DT Clearance Information:

Rhode Island requires students who will complete Demonstration Teaching to obtain a Student Teaching Permit.  Follow the instructions in the Rhode Island Student Teaching Permit Required Prior to DT article in the student handbook at least 30 days, but no more than 90 days before your intended DT start date.

 

SCHOOL DISTRICT BACKGROUND CLEARANCE OPTION

WGU students currently employed by a school district that cleared them for employment with a fingerprint based background check in the last five years may have the option of using the school district clearance in place of the Rhode Island Bureau of Criminal Information background check.
