Rhode Island has the following requirements for all applicants for initial teacher certification:
1. DEGREE: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
2. PROGRAM: Completion of a state-approved teacher preparation program no more than five years previous to application for teacher certification in Rhode Island.
3. SECONDARY CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: For secondary education teacher candidates, a major or the equivalent in the content area specialization for which certification is sought. Please see the Requirements for the Secondary Education Teaching Certificate for a breakdown of semester hour requirements for each secondary-level endorsement area.
4. EXAMS: Passing the required Praxis exams.

5. Demonstration Teaching Requirement: BASP/BASPEE students will need to complete 2 full 12-week Demonstration Teaching placements:
