Rhode Island Endorsement and Exam Requirements

In Rhode Island, this program leads to a Dependent Certificate in English as a Second Language.

In Rhode Island, the English as a Second Language certificate is dependent upon the initial teaching certificate(s) held. For example, if the educator's Independent Certificate is in Elementary Education, then the ESL certificate issued will also be for Elementary Education. All Grades English as a Second Language Teacher Grades PK-12 certification requires the educator to hold an Independent Certification in All Grades - any content area. The English as a Second Language Specialist/Consultant certification is dependent upon experience and the Independent Certification held. Content Exam for Rhode Island Certification: 
Praxis 5362, English to Speakers of Other Languages. This exam also satisfies the WGU Program Requirement. The Praxis 5361 will be accepted for certification in Rhode Island if passed between 07/01/2014 - 09/30/2016.

Rhode Island requires students to complete a 45 clock hour practicum in an ESL program.  You must complete your practicum at the same grade level of the dependent ESL certificate you are seeking.
