**Note For MAME (Middle Grades) Students: South Carolina requires three courses for middle grades certification which WGU's MAME5-9 program does not include. Therefore, you will need to complete these courses at a South Carolina institution in order to be eligible for middle grades certification in South Carolina:

  • Teaching Reading & Writing in the Content Area (3 semester hours

In South Carolina, completion of the Master of Mathematics Education (Secondary) program leads to an endorsement in Secondary Mathematics Grades 9-12.

1) Content Exams: Praxis 5161, Mathematics: Content Knowledge

You must pass this exam to graduate from the program and be recommended for licensure in South Carolina. This exam also satisfies the WGU Program Requirement.

OR, if passed prior to 9/1/2013, and applying for certification prior to 9/1/2018, Praxis 5061 & Praxis 5063

**Note For MAME (Secondary) Students: To add a secondary mathematics endorsement, South Carolina requires 26 hours of mathematics content coursework as follows:
     A.  Algebra (abstract, matrix, and linear) - 6 Semester Hours
     B.  Modern Geometry or Foundations of Geometry - 3 Semester Hours
     C.  Calculus - 8 Semester Hours
     D.  Electives (Probability, Statistics, Applied or Discrete Math, Number Theory, Analysis, Advanced Courses in Algebra and Geometry) - 9 Semester Hours

The WGU MAME (Secondary) Program does not include all 26 Hours, so you must have already completed some coursework at previous institutions or plan to complete additional coursework outside of WGU. It is recommended that you apply for your endorsement to the Department of Education in advance to obtain a letter of deficiency showing how many credits you are missing. Fill out the Request for Change/Action form and mark the box for #2, "Evaluate my file for the license area Secondary Mathematics." Include all official transcripts for evaluation of any math courses you have completed.
