TN BA Special Education/Elementary Education Certification and Exam Requirements

Certification Available for Graduates of WGU's BA Special Education Program: Elementary Education K-5 and Special Education: Special Education Interventionist K-8 and Special Education Interventionist 6-12

Required Content Exams: 

Note: Applicants must have passed the required exams within five years prior to the date they apply for licensure.

1. Praxis 5001, Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects

(OR, Praxis 5018, Elementary Education: Content Knowledge if passed by 8/31/2019 and you apply for licensure by 8/31/2024;

OR if passed by 8/31/14 and you apply for licensure by 8/31/2019: Praxis 5014, Elementary Education: Content Knowledge)

2. Praxis 5543, Special Education: Core Knowledge and Mild to Moderate Applications

    This exam also satisfies the WGU Program Requirement (for students who matriculated on 9/1/2011 or after)

Required Pedagogy Exams:

1. Praxis 5203, Teaching Reading: Elementary


2. Praxis 5622, Principles of Learning and Teaching: Elementary K-6
    Note: Effective 10/1/2016, if you completed edTPA during the demonstration teaching portion of your WGU teacher preparation program, then you do not need to pass Praxis 5622, Principles of Learning and Teaching: Elementary K-6. If you did not complete edTPA, then you will need to pass Praxis 5622 to be eligible for licensure recommendation in Tennessee.
