Instructional Leadership

Tennessee has the following general requirements for applicants for initial teacher certification who have completed their teacher preparation at an out-of-state institution and do not yet hold a teaching certificate. Educators from out-of-state will apply for a practitioner license. This license has a three year validity period and is renewable one time. Those applying from out-of-state must meet the following criteria:

1. EXAMS: Have submitted qualifying scores on required content assessments. The scores must have been obtained within five years prior to the date that you apply for licensure.

2. DEGREE: Have at least a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university.

3. PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
Must have completed an educator preparation program approved for licensure by a state other than Tennessee. To demonstrate evidence of successful completion of an out-of-state program, the applicant must submit:

  • Recommendation from the out-of-state provider where the educator completed an approved program. All out-of-state educator preparation programs must meet conditions stipulated in State Board Rule 0520-02-03.

For additional information on certification requirements, see the Tennessee Department of Education website.
