Tennessee Early Childhood Education Certification and Exam Requirements

LICENSE AND EXAM REQUIREMENTS
Early Childhood Education Certification Available: Early Childhood Education Pk-Grade 3
Graduates of a WGU early childhood education teacher preparation program will be eligible for Early Childhood Education Pk-Grade 3 teacher licensure in Tennessee, which will allow them to teach in any multiple subject classroom in that grade range.
Early Childhood Education Exams and Requirements:
Content Exams (Two Exams):
A. Praxis 5024, Education of Young Children
(OR, if passed prior to 9/1/2014: Praxis 5021, Education of Young Children)
B. Praxis 5018, Elementary Education: Content Knowledge
(OR, if passed prior to 9/1/2014: Praxis 5014, Elementary Education: Content Knowledge)
Pedagogy Exams (Two Exams)
A. Praxis 5203, Teaching Reading: Elementary
(OR, if passed prior to 9/1/2013, Praxis 5201 Reading Across the Curriculum: Elementary)
B. Praxis 5621, Principles of Learning and Teaching: Early Childhood
(OR, if passed prior to 9/1/2011, Praxis 0521, Principles of Learning and Teaching: Early Childhood)
Note: Effective 10/1/2016, If you completed edTPA during the demonstration teaching portion of your WGU teacher
preparation program, then you do not need to pass Praxis 5621, Principles of Learning and Teaching: Early Childhood.
If you did not complete edTPA, then you will need to pass Praxis 5621 to be eligible for licensure recommendation in
WGU ECE Program Requirement (One Exam) (for students who matriculated on March 1, 2012 or later. See the WGU Program Requirement for the Early Childhood Education program)
Pass any of the following:
A. Praxis 5018, Elementary Education: Content Knowledge OR
B. Praxis 5014, Elementary Education: Content Knowledge OR
C. Praxis 5001, Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects OR
D. Praxis 5031, Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects
To qualify for early childhood licensure in TN, you must pass the exams described above as well as meet all other general Tennessee teacher certification requirements.
REGISTERING FOR EXAMS
Before registering for the Praxis II exams, be sure to review WGU's general policies regarding external certification exams. Exam registration is available through the ETS website at www.ets.org/praxis. The ETS website will provide you with the test dates available. The minimum required scores for Tennessee can be found by reviewing the TN Praxis Exam Requirements.
SUBMITTING SCORES TO WGU
To ensure that WGU receives ALL of your exam scores and can verify your eligibility for licensure, you must fax a copy of your official score report to the Assessments Office at 1-801-606-7021 or email a scanned copy to email@example.com. All required exam scores must be on file with WGU at your time of graduation so that the Certification Officer can recommend you for certification.
TEACHING PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT
All initial teacher candidates must complete the Tennessee Teaching Performance Assessment requirement.
