Tennessee Middle Grades Science Certification and Exam Requirements

LICENSE AND EXAM REQUIREMENTS
Middle Grades Science Certification Available:
Middle School Science, 6-8
While WGU's science 5-9 teacher preparation programs cover grades 5-9, grades 6-8 licensure is awarded in Tennessee as stipulated by the Tennessee Department of Education classification for middle grades.
Middle Grades Science Exams and Requirements:
Praxis 5440, Middle School Science
Pedagogy Exams (two exams):
A. Praxis 5203, Teaching Reading: Elementary
(OR, if passed prior to 9/1/2013 and you apply before 9/1/2018, Praxis 5201, Reading Across the Curriculum:
B. Praxis 5623, Principles of Learning and Teaching 5-9
(OR, if passed prior to 9/1/2011, Praxis 5523, Principles of Learning and Teaching 5-9)
Note: Effective 10/1/2016, If you completed edTPA during the demonstration teaching portion of your WGU teacher
preparation program, then you do not need to pass Praxis 5623, Principles of Learning and Teaching 5-9.
If you did not complete edTPA, then you will need to pass Praxis 5623 to be eligible for licensure recommendation in
WGU Program Requirement:
You have two options to satisfy the WGU Program Requirement. You may pass either:
A. Praxis 5440 Middle School Science OR
B. Praxis 5439 Middle School Science (this does not satisfy the TN Middle Grades Math content exam above)
To qualify for the Middle Grades Science, grades 6-8, teaching license in TN, you must pass the Praxis exams described above as well as meet all other general Tennessee teacher certification requirements. The Praxis 5440 or 5439 exam must also be passed to meet the WGU Program Requirement for the 5-9 science programs.
REGISTERING FOR EXAMS
Before registering for the Praxis exams, be sure to review WGU's general policies regarding external certification exams. Exam registration is available through the ETS website at www.ets.org/praxis. The ETS website will provide you with the test dates available. The minimum required scores for Tennessee can be found by reviewing the TN Praxis Exam Requirements.
SUBMITTING SCORES TO WGU
To ensure that WGU receives ALL of your exam scores and can verify your eligibility for licensure, you must fax a copy of your official score report to the Assessments Office at 1-801-606-7021 or email a scanned copy to email@example.com. All required exam scores must be on file with WGU at your time of graduation so that the Certification Officer can recommend you for certification.
TEACHING PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT
All initial teacher candidates must complete the Tennessee Teaching Performance Assessment requirement.
