Tennessee Teacher Certification Application Information and Instructions
Note: To be eligible for recommendation by the Certification Office, students completing a bachelor's degree, a post baccalaureate teacher preparation program, or a Master of Science in Special Education degree must graduate and have their degree posted to their WGU transcript. Students who are pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching degree must have marks of “passed” on their degree plan for all teacher preparation assessments to include any program required Praxis exams as well as all state required exams.
Tennessee accepts direct applications for licensure from students who have completed an out-of-state, approved teacher preparation program, like those offered by WGU. Follow the steps below to prepare your application for Tennessee licensure. You may also access the Tennessee Department of Education website for teacher certification application information.
Pedagogy Scores: Note that WGU requires you to submit all certification exam score reports in order for the university to complete any forms required for certification in your state, including pedagogy exams that were not required for graduation (see #3 in the State Certification Exam Requirements of this handbook). Tennessee requires pedagogy exams for each area of certification, and Elementary certification (including BA Special Education graduates) requires two pedagogy exams. If you have not reported your Praxis content or pedagogy exam scores to WGU, you will need to send a copy of those score reports to email@example.com before your Tennessee application form can be completed.
Step 1: Register for your TNCompass account. Refer to this guide for instructions.
Step 2: If the Tennessee Department of Education was not selected as an official score recipient when you registered for your Praxis exams, you will need to contact ETS and request that they mail an official score report directly to the TN Department of Education. You may do this by calling 1-800-772-9476 or by submitting the Additional Score Report Request Form to ETS via fax or mail.
Note: Applicants must have passed the required exams within five years prior to the date they apply for licensure.
Step 3: Your edTPA score report must be sent directly from Pearson to the Tennessee Department of Education at the address listed below in Step 6. You may also call 866-565-4872 for questions regarding submitting your edTPA scores to the Tennessee Department of Education.
Step 4: Request official transcripts in sealed envelopes from every college you have attended. Once your graduation application has been processed by the WGU Records Office you will receive a notification with information on how to order two complimentary copies of your official WGU transcript from the National Student Clearinghouse. You will have the option of selecting electronic or mail delivery. If you would like to order additional transcripts, see the WGU Transcript FAQ article. Do not request a transcript until you have received notice of graduation, so that your graduation date will appear on your transcript. MAT students may request a transcript after completing the teacher preparation portion of their MAT program. Be sure to leave transcripts you elect to have mailed to you in their sealed envelopes.
Step 5: If you have one or more years of acceptable teaching experience, then you need to have an authorized school official from the employing school fill out the Experience Verification Form and return it to you for inclusion in your application packet.
Step 6: Mail your transcripts (and Experience Verification Form, if applicable) to the following address:

Step 7: Complete Section 1, Applicant Contact Information of the ED2034 application form.
Step 8: Send the two application pages to the WGU Teacher Licensure Office at the contact information below. Email submissions are preferred.
A licensure analyst will review your application, complete the second page, then email the form back to you.
Step 9: Upload your completed application form to the "Out of State Attachments" section of your TNCompass application.
