Texas Background Clearance Information for Direct / Approved Pathways


Texas Background Clearance 
All Texas background checks submitted to the WGU certification office must be less than two years old to meet WGU requirements. Previously submitted background checks that will be over two years old by the end date of your Demonstration Teaching will need to be renewed by the background clearance deadline set for your cohort.

To obtain a Department of Public Saftey background clearance in Texas, complete a background check for personal reasons through the FAST (live scan) process of IdentoGO (formerly known as L-1 Enrollment):

1. Click on Schedule or Manage an Appointment.
2. Complete the registration questions and indicate yourself as the recipient of the results.

Upload your background check results in your student Field Experience portal under PCE Background Clearance and/or DT Background Clearance.

If you have already completed a DPS Background Check for a School District, WGU will accept a letter, printed on district letterhead, confirming that you completed a background check. The letter must include the date of your background check and indicate that you are cleared to complete field experiences in the district. Note that districts are not permitted to release the actual results, but they can confirm that you are clear to complete field experiences in their schools as a result of a background check. However, if for any reason your district does not wish to comply with your request for a letter, then you must complete a new "Personal Review" background check as instructed above.

If you are currently employed in a school district and completed a recent background check, you have the option of submitting their school district clearance to WGU. Please see the School District Background Clearance Article in this handbook for more information.

If you have been issued a Texas Substitute, Educational Aide, or other Teaching Certificate, and WGU is able to verify it online through the Texas Education Agency portal, then you do not need to complete the Department of Public Safety background check described above. Instead, upload your certificate in your student Field Experience portal under PCE Background Clearance and/or DT Background Clearance. 

Note: You may also be required to do a background check as part of your application for TX teacher certification.

In certain circumstances, even though you have been cleared for demonstration teaching by WGU, the school district in which you are placed for field experiences may have an additional background check requirement that is not required by WGU. Or, the school district may make a different determination regarding a background clearance. You may be required to provide additional documentation to the school district. If so, you are also required to abide by the school district’s decision of approval or denial of the submitted background clearance information.
