TX Basic Skills Requirements

Texas Basic Skills Requirements

While Texas does not require a basic skills exam for certification, WGU requires that all students in the Teachers College take and pass a basic skills test within the first 6 months of entering the Foundations of Teaching (FOT) domain. (See WGU Basic Skills Requirement and Cut Scores in this handbook for more information.)

Basic Skills Exam: Praxis 5751, Core Academic Skills for Educators Tests OR Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA)

Note: THEA is not likely to be offered after December 31, 2017. If you are able to register for and take THEA after December 31, 2017, WGU will accept it to meet the WGU basic skills requirement

Alternate Testing Options

1) ACT, SAT Exemptions: If your ACT or SAT scores are no more than 5 years old, you may be eligible to use your ACT or SAT scores in lieu of the Praxis Core if you meet the parameters outlined here.

Information about the TSI Assessment (Not Required for WGU Teacher Candidates): The Texas Education Agency has established a basic skills exam called the "TSI Assessment" for teacher candidates who attend approved education preparation programs in the state of Texas. This exam is normally completed as part of the admissions process for approved Texas programs. WGU Post-Bacc and MAT teacher candidates are exempt from the TSI requirement because Texas Rules don't  require those who already hold a bachelor's degree to meet the basic skills requirement.
