2. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a Bachelor's degree program from a regionally accredited four-year college or university.

3. PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: Completion of a state-approved teacher education program and recommendation for certification by the approved program.

4. BASIC SKILLS: Passing scores on the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA).

5. CONTENT AND PEDAGOGY EXAMS: Passing scores on the required subject matter examinations

6. CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT RECOGNITION AND INTERVENTION TRAINING:  Individuals seeking an initial license and license renewal must complete training in child abuse recognition and intervention in accordance with curriculum guidelines approved by the Board of Education. The Child abuse recognition and intervention training can be completed through a free training module

7. EMERGENCY FIRST AID, CPR, AND AED TRAINING:  Provide evidence of completion of certification or training in emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and the use of automated external defribillators (AED). As of September 1, 2017 the training must include hands-on practice of the skills necessary to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation. More information on this training requirement may be found at the Virginia Department of Education web site here.

8. DYSLEXIA TRAINING: Effective July 1, 2017 every person seeking initial licensure or renewal of a license shall complete awareness training, provided by the Virginia Department of Education, on the indicators of dyslexia. The Dyslexia Awareness Training Module is accessible from PCs and Mac computers. Viewing on an iPad or smartphone requires the download of the free “mobile player.”  Users should complete the module in one session and have access to a printer.
