To be eligible for recommendation by the Certification Office, students completing a bachelor’s degree, a post baccalaureate teacher preparation program, or a Master of Science in Special Education degree must graduate and have their degree posted to their WGU transcript. Students who are pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching degree must have marks of "passed” on their Degree Plan for all teacher preparation assessments to include any program required Praxis exams as well as all state required exams.
Virginia Licensure Application Instructions:
Step 1: Request official transcripts in sealed envelopes from every college or university you have attended. Two official WGU transcripts will be sent to you along with your diploma upon graduation. If you would like to order additional transcripts, see WGU Transcript Request.
Step 2: Download and review the Application for Virginia Licensure.
Step 3: Complete the free training module in child abuse and neglect recognition and intervention that is required of all individuals seeking initial licensure in Virginia. Select the "Required Training/Courses" tab under the heading "Child Protective Services." Then select the "Child Abuse and Neglect: Recognizing, Reporting, & Responding (For Educators)." When you complete the training, you will need to print out the certificate of completion awarded at the end, so that you may submit it as part of your application packet.
Step 4: Complete the required First Aid, CPR, and AED training. Every person seeking initial licensure shall provide evidence of completion of certification or training in emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the use of automated external defribillators. The certification or training program shall be based on the current national evidence-based emergency cardiovascular care guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defribillator, such as a program developed by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. More information on this training requirement may be found at the Virginia Department of Education web site here.
Step 5: Fill out the application form. If you have not had at least one year of full-time, contractual teaching or other professional experience in a public or accredited private school, then you do not need to fill out Part IV.
Step 6: Fill out your personal information in Part I of the College Verification Form on p.8 of the Licensure Application Packet and send it to the WGU Certification Officer at the contact information below for completion. Email submissions are preferred. Email attachments should be in PDF format.
The Certification Officer will complete the form and mail it back to you for inclusion in your application packet. If you have not already reported your exam scores (VCLA, Praxis and RVE, as applicable) to WGU, you will need to send a copy of those scores to the Certification Officer as well before the recommendation can be completed.
Step 7: If you have at least one year of full-time, contractual teaching or other professional experience in a public or accredited private school, then you need to have the proper school official(s) complete the Report on Experience form.
