U.S. Virgin Islands Special Education / Elementary Education Certification and Exam Requirements

LICENSE AND EXAM REQUIREMENTS
Certification Available for Graduates of WGU's BA Special Education Program: Elementary Educator, Grades K-6 and Special Educator in Mild/Moderate Disabilities, Grades K-12
Graduates of WGU's BA Special Education teacher preparation program will be eligible for grades K-6 Elementary Education and grades K-12 Special Educator (mild/moderate disabilities) teacher certification in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Upon certification, graduates will be qualified to be the primary instructor in both mild/moderate special education and regular education settings at the elementary level as well as to provide collaborative/consultative services for mild/moderate special education students learning at the secondary level. You would need to complete additional requirements in order to be Highly Qualified to be the primary instructor of core academic subjects to special education students who are learning at the secondary-level (Grades 7-12).
Elementary Education/ Special Education Exams and Requirements:
1. Content Exam for Virgin Islands Elementary Certification: Praxis 5018, Elementary Education: Content Knowledge
2. Content Exam for VI Special Education Certification: Praxis 5354, Special Education: Core Knowledge and Applications
3. Pedagogy Exams for VI Certification: Praxis 5622, Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades K-6
WGU Program Requirement: Praxis II 0543 (paper) or 5543 (computer), Special Education: Core Knowledge and Mild to Moderate Applications (for students who matriculated on 9/1/2011 or after)
Prior to licensure in the US Virgin Islands, you must pass the Praxis 5018, 5354, and 5622 exams required by the US Virgin Islands for elementary and special education certification and meet all other general U.S. Virgin Island teacher certification requirements.
REGISTERING FOR EXAMS
Before registering for the Praxis II exams, be sure to review WGU's general policies regarding external certification exams. Exam registration is available through the ETS website at www.ets.org/praxis. The ETS website will provide you with the test dates available. The minimum required scores for the Virgin Islands can be found by reviewing the VI Praxis Exam Requirements.
SUBMITTING SCORES TO WGU
To ensure that WGU receives ALL of your exam scores and can verify your eligibility for licensure, you must fax a copy of your official score report to the Assessments Office at 801-906-5108 or email a scanned copy to firstname.lastname@example.org. All required exam scores must be on file with WGU at your time of graduation so that the Certification Officer can recommend you for certification.
DEMONSTRATION TEACHING REQUIREMENT
16 weeks divided between elementary and special education, as determined by WGU.
