Washington Administrator Certification Application Information and Instructions

CERTIFICATION INSTRUCTIONS
(Effective 7/1/14)

To be eligible for recommendation by the Certification Office, students must graduate and have their degree posted to their WGU transcript. 

Note: DO NOT APPLY FOR CERTIFICATION on your own using online Form 4001. Doing so will only delay the certification process. Instead, you will be recommended for your Washington license by the Certification Officer at Western Governors University if you follow these steps:

Step 1 - Background Check: Educators with a current Washington teaching license are not required to complete an additional background check. 

Out of State Applicants (or Washington Residents with an inactive teaching license): If you are licensed as a teacher in a state other than Washington, then before you submit your application, you must have completed and cleared a Washington State Patrol/ FBI background check


Step 2: If you have not done so earlier, create an account in the Washington Education Data System (EDS) portal. After about 30 minutes, click on "My Applications" and locate "E-Certification" from the application list. Enter the E-Certification application and be sure your profile information is correct, especially your Social Security number. After you have confirmed your information in the "E-Certification" application, proceed to step 3.. Note: Creating duplicate accounts will delay the issuance of your certificate. If you aren't sure if you already have an account, please contact licensure@wgu.edu.

Step 3: Contact the WGU Certification Officer at licensure@wgu.edu to request your recommendation for licensure. 

Step 4: After the WGU Certification Officer has verified your eligibility, they will recommend you for your Residency Administrator (First Issue) certificate with Principal endorsement through Washington's EDS E-Cert platform. You will then receive an e-mail from licensure@wgu.edu with instructions to log on to EDS E-Cert to claim your WGU recommendation.
