Washington Basic Skills Requirement

Basic Skills Exam: Washington Educator Skills Test-Basic (West-B)

While Washington requires only an attempt of its own basic skills examination for initial licensure, WGU requires you to pass all three sub-tests (with a minimum score of 240 for each), or complete their approved alternatives listed below in order to meet the WGU Basic Skills Exam requirement.

Washington may permit you to use your SAT or ACT exam to satisfy the basic skills exam requirement. Click here for more information on using your SAT or ACT exam for Washington. WGU teacher candidates that will license in Washington may substitute a passing score on one or more sections of the SAT or ACT for the equivalent passing scores on the WEST-B.

  • SAT:
    • If taken prior to 3/5/2016, you must have minimum scores of:
      • 515 for Math
      • 500 for Verbal/Critical Reading
      • 490 for Writing
    • If taken on or after 3/5/2016, you must have minimum scores of:
      • 27.50 for Math
      • 27 for Reading
      • 28 for Writing 
  • ACT: If you took the ACT prior to the Reading or Writing sections being included in the ACT, you must submit passing scores on the corresponding section of the WEST-B or SAT. 
    • Math: you must have a minimum score of 22
    • Reading: you must have a minimum score of:
      • 22 if taken on 10/1/1989 or after 
    • Writing: you must have a minimum score of: 
      • 8 if taken between 2/1/2005 and 8/31/2015
      • 23 if taken between 9/1/2015 and 8/31/2016
      • 8 if taken on 9/1/2016 or after


To ensure WGU receives your SAT or ACT scores, you must email a scanned copy of your official score report to the Assessments Office at scores@wgu.edu, or fax a copy to 1-801-906-5108.
