In West Virginia, WGU's initial teacher preparation programs in science lead to an Initial License in one of the following Secondary Science Certification areas

Earth & Space Science, 5-Adult
Physics, Grades 9-Adult

Chemistry, Grades 9-Adult

Content: Praxis 5245, Chemistry: Content Knowledge

Pedagogy: Praxis 5624, PLT 7-12**

Earth & Space Science, Grades 5-Adult

Content: Praxis 5571, Earth and Space Sciences: Content Knowledge

Pedagogy: Praxis 5624, PLT 7-12**

Physics, Grades 9-Adult

Content: Praxis 5265, Physics: Content Knowledge

The content exams listed meet the West Virginia requirements as well as the WGU Praxis graduation requirements


You must pass the content exam to graduate from your program. You must take the required pedagogy exam to be recommended for teacher certification. 

**Note:  if you completed edTPA during the demonstration teaching portion of your WGU teacher preparation program, then you do not need to pass the Praxis 5624, Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 7 - 12. If you did not complete edTPA, then you will need to pass Praxis 5624 to be eligible for licensure recommendation in West Virginia.


Practicum Requirement

West Virginia requires completion of demonstration teaching in a public school.
